(Vienna/Přerov, 15 June 2026) – Following 16 months of construction, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has opened the modernised combined transport container terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice. With double the space, increased capacity and modernised infrastructure, the terminal is consolidating its role as a central logistics hub in Central Europe.

Twice the space and increased capacity represent an investment in the future
The revitalisation project addresses long-standing capacity bottlenecks at the terminal, particularly the lack of handling areas and limited access to individual tracks. The terminal site has been expanded by around 17,100 m² – bringing the total area to around 36,000 m² – and almost doubling it. As part of the modernisation, the handling and storage areas were enlarged, track access improved and new handling equipment commissioned. With a capacity of around 3,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), the terminal will enable higher-quality shipment handling and a higher train frequency, thus offering greater flexibility for freight customers.

Strengthening Přerov as a key logistics hub
The modernised terminal offers benefits for both customers and the region: handling will be faster and more reliable, and the capacity for handling containers and semi-trailers will increase significantly. At the same time, Přerov will be strengthened as a distribution centre in Central Moravia with efficient connections to the rail and road networks.

Plans include the development of new rail connections to the ports of Koper and Rijeka, the strengthening of intermodal routes in Central Europe, and integration into Euro-Asian rail connections via Budapest. The expanded terminal area also opens up the possibility of handling semi-trailers.

Christoph Grasl, Member of the Board of the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, emphasises the importance of the terminal: “We see Přerov as a key hub for the further development of combined transport in Central Europe. Our long-term goal is to build a robust and flexible logistics infrastructure that offers our customers stability, even in times of fluctuating global supply chains.”

Terminal expansion supports modal shift to rail
The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group continues a long tradition in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice: the site dates back to the former ČSKD-INTRANS terminal from the 1970s, which was already one of the most important hubs for Czechoslovakian combined transport during the ČSD era. While many comparable terminals disappeared after 1990, the site in Přerov remained in operation thanks to its strategically important location and gradually developed into a major intermodal hub in Moravia.

The expansion of the terminal makes an important contribution to shifting freight transport from road to rail and is co-financed by the European Union.
By expanding combined transport services, CO₂ emissions are reduced and the heavily burdened road infrastructure is relieved. The modernised terminal further strengthens the role of rail freight as an environmentally friendly alternative within European logistics.
