(Vienna, 31 March 2025) – With the new
TransFER Vienna–Duisburg , ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is now connecting two major logistics hubs in Austria and Germany. Customers benefit from fixed timetables, attractive transit times and direct transport connections to Hungary and Italy as well as within Austria. Containers, swap bodies, cranable trailers as well as hazardous goods are also transported.
The new direct connection between these key rail freight transport locations is the perfect addition to the network. Vienna is one of the world’s central hubs and its strategic location provides an ideal link between Western, Central and Southeastern Europe. Duisburg is Europe’s largest inland port and one of the most important railports for intermodal transports – it acts as a gateway for transport to and from Asia, in particular.
Connections in all Directions: More Capacity for Optimised Traffic FlowsBy introducing the new TransFER, RCG is taking the pressure off the busy
TransFER Budapest–Duisburg with two weekly round trips. This creates additional capacity, which reduces bottlenecks and opens the door to even more transport options. For customers, this means optimised use of transport resources and improved planning reliability.
In addition, the
TransFER Vienna–Duisburg can be optimally combined with the existing
TransFER Budapest–Duisburg,
TransFER Wels–Vienna–Budapest and
TransFER Budapest–Istanbul connections. For example, a transhipment in Vienna enables a seamless onward journey to Budapest and on to Turkey. Vienna also has a connection to every Austrian terminal.
Thanks to perfectly coordinated connections between Vienna and Budapest and between Vienna and Verona, there are efficient transport options to the south-east and west European markets as well as efficient triangular transport between Vienna, Budapest and Duisburg. This means that the new TransFER not only creates a non-stop connection between Vienna and Duisburg, but also offers customised connection options.
- Austria: direct transport connection to Austrian terminals
- Hungary to Turkey: perfect connection to Budapest (BILK terminal) and onwards to Istanbul (Halkali terminal)
- Italy: direct link with Verona (Sona terminal)
