ÖBB Rail Cargo Group launches new TransFER connections

  • New TransFER connections bring more freight trains with fixed timetables
  • Tuzla–Rijeka: Bosnian-Herzegovinian industrial region connected to the port of Rijeka
  • Budapest–Curtici: New non-stop connection

The main activity of the terminal at BILK is the handling of combined transport consignments: Here the terminal takes care of cargo handling from rail to road and vice versa.

(Vienna, 2 December 2025) – ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is expanding its TransFER connections at relevant hubs, offering its customers new logistics solutions.

The TransFER Tuzla–Rijeka is the first connection of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina and opens up new opportunities for an important industrial region. At the important hub of Budapest, RCG is supplementing its new connection TransFER Budapest-Curtici for optimised end-to-end transport chains between the economic centres of Western, Central and South-Eastern Europe.

TransFER connections are trains that transport goods on fixed timetables and with predefined stops. The principle is similar to that of passenger trains. Freight customers use these connections either with conventional freight wagons or intermodal units, such as containers, and can book easily and flexibly on a train. There are currently over 60 such connections, and by combining several TransFER connections, over 1,500 options are available.

New TransFER is a milestone for Bosnia and Herzegovina
With the TransFER Tuzla–Rijeka, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is launching the first intermodal connection of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina, opening up new prospects for the region. The industrial region of Tuzla benefits from the direct connection to the port of Rijeka, which is a central hub for Southern, Central and South-Eastern Europe and a gateway to international markets. In addition to the weekly train connection, the Rail Cargo Group offers port-to-door solutions that enable a direct delivery from the port to the customer.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group CEO Clemens Först explains the advantage of the new connection: "The industrial region around Tuzla generates large transport volumes from various industries. We have recognised that efficient logistics solutions are in demand due to the complex supply chains in the region. This is exactly where our rail freight transport services make the difference: we offer a sustainable alternative to road transport, enable the safe and plannable transport of large volumes and also reduce CO₂ emissions. The new connection is therefore a real competitive advantage for industry."

Nonstop connection between Budapest and Curtici links logistics hubs
The new TransFER Budapest–Curtici currently connects the BILK terminal in Budapest with Curtici once a week. The BILK terminal is the most important intermodal hub between Western and South-Eastern Europe, and Curtici is the gateway to Romania and further on to the Balkans and Turkey. The new connection complements the existing TransNET (the RCG network). In combination with existing TransFER connections such as Budapest–Duisburg, Budapest–Zeebrugge and Wels–Vienna–Budapest, customers benefit from continuous transport chains between the economic centres of Western, Central and South-Eastern Europe. This means fewer transhipments, shorter transit times and maximum planning security for customers of ÖBB Rail Cargo Group.
